The mayor has authority over the covered markets, fairs and street markets. He has the right to enforce his decisions. He is responsible for regulating market activities without infringing the right to trade freely.
To help municipalities to draw up market rules, a document entitled ‘proposition d’arrêté portant réglement général du marché’ (suggested order/bylaw for the general regulation of markets) is designed to clarify the rights and obligations of councillors and professionals. Nevertheless, by virtue of the principal of communal autonomy, it remains up to the mayor to adapt this model to the specific needs of his commune.
